The Story of Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance

This is one of the most exciting survival stories of all time. A ship, the Endurance, sinks into the ice and the crew is rescued with their own forces and under the leadership of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton after almost two years.

„The boat journey promised even worse hardships than those through which we had but recently passed. Yet so strong was the men’s affection for Shackleton, so great was their loyalty to him, that they responded as though they had not undergone any of the experiences that so often destroy those sentiments. They were as eager to accompany him as they had been on the first of August, 1914, the day upon which we had sailed nearly two years before.“
Meanwhile the crew had to wait
Under the two remaining boats

The Rescue
The journey was 1.500 km or 800 Seamiles long.

And they reached South Georgia on Mai 10, 1916, but the whale station Stromness was 51km (32 Miles) away.

Shackelton left 3 men back and travelled further by foot,
until they reached Stromness on Mai 20, 1916.

On August 30, 1916 all of his crew members could be fetched up on Elephant Island and brought to Chile

Five years later, on January 22, 1922, Shackelton died of a heart attack and was buried on the island of South Georgia at his wife’s request.

[…] Yes, we shouldn’t laugh like that. That actually happened to Ernest Shackleton in 1914. His ship got stuck and the crew was only rescued a year and a half later. You can read about it at: https://mb-projekt.com/2024/08/30/ship-on-ice/ […]
