Noch Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zählte die nordamerikanische Wandertaube mit geschätzten drei bis fünf Milliarden Exemplaren zu den häufigsten Vogelarten, ja mehr noch, es war die häufigste Tierart der Welt.
